Nunavimmiut Visit Gaspé to Explore Wind Energy and the Future of Power in Nunavik

In early September, a group of Inuit from Puvirnituq and Quaqtaq embarked on a journey to the Gaspé region to witness wind energy in action. This was the second edition of Tarquti’s Renewable Energy Exploration Tour, a hands-on experience designed to connect Nunavimmiut with the technologies and people shaping the future of green energy in our province.

Arrival in Gaspé: Orientation Dinner

The trip began with an orientation dinner, where participants gathered to meet one another, learn the plans for the week ahead, and hear opening remarks. Johnny Ovvout, a respected member of Quaqtaq, shared powerful reflections on Inuit history and the pace of change in Nunavik. He spoke about how Inuit have lived in the region for over 3,800 years, and how the last century has brought rapid transformation, from igloos to green energy.

Johnny reflected on how this transition will affect individuals and communities alike. He mentioned the personal benefits of fuel savings, but also emphasized the importance of developing energy-conscious habits, like turning off lights in unused rooms. His words reminded everyone that while technology is important, the values and choices of the people using it are just as vital.

Seeing Turbines Up Close and Learning from the Experts

The tour was made possible through the continued collaboration with Nergica, a research organization specializing in renewable energy technologies. Their deep understanding of wind turbine systems and the Gaspé region helped shape a meaningful and informative itinerary.

The delegation visited Nergica’s test site, where wind turbines and solar panels operate in a simulated microgrid similar to the grid infrastructure found in Nunavik communities. Here, Nunavimmiut had the chance to speak directly with wind turbine technicians, asking questions about maintenance, common challenges, and the realities of working with these systems in remote environments.

During the visit, one turbine was undergoing blade repairs, offering a rare opportunity to observe the repair process and equipment setup. Although the turbines were temporarily offline due to Hydro-Québec maintenance, the experience still provided valuable insights into how these systems are managed safely and efficiently.

Witnessing Wind Power in Motion

The group then traveled to the Anse-à-Valleau Wind Farm, home to 67 turbines generating over 100 megawatts of power. Unlike the test site, these turbines were actively producing electricity, giving participants a chance to see and hear the technology in action. Many were surprised by how quiet the turbines were, even with numerous turbines in the area.

With Nergica’s operations supervisor still on hand, the group continued asking questions and deepening their understanding of how wind farms operate on a large scale.

Preparing for the Future

The tour concluded with a visit to the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, where participants took part in an information session on the program along with demonstrations. The Cégep’s facilities include full-scale wind turbine components and a working-at-height rescue simulator, offering a glimpse into the training required for turbine maintenance.

Some individuals were identified as potential candidates for the first cohort of Nunavimmiut trainees. During the visit, they had the opportunity to participate in a climbing exercise, giving them a real sense of what it’s like to work at height, a major factor in wind turbine maintenance. This hands-on experience helped them better understand the physical demands and safety protocols involved in the field.

Tarquti is working closely with the Cégep to develop a tailored training program for Nunavimmiut interested in becoming wind turbine technicians. While the number of jobs created by these projects may be modest, they represent a new and exciting opportunity for local employment in a growing field.

A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

Throughout the trip, many participants expressed how grateful they were to be part of the experience. They appreciated the opportunity to learn more about renewable technologies, ask questions, and gain clarity on concerns they had. The tour helped build confidence and familiarity with the green energy sector, leaving attendees feeling more reassured and informed about the future projects coming to their communities.

These projects will significantly reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower the carbon footprint of Nunavik’s communities. For the first time, communities will also benefit economically from electricity production, thanks to partnerships with local stakeholders.

Tarquti extends heartfelt thanks to Nergica for their continued support and collaboration, and to Pesca Environnement, Techéol, Ganex, and Caribou Ungava for their insightful presentations. Special thanks also go to CQFME (Quebec’s Training Centre on Wind Turbines Maintenance) for their support in developing future training programs for Nunavimmiut.

Tarquti is proud to have once again led a group of Nunavimmiut to Gaspé to learn more about the technologies that will shape our energy future. Together, we are building the knowledge, skills, and partnerships needed to power Nunavik sustainably, for generations to come.
