Groundbreaking gathering brings together community leadership, shareholders, and project partners as construction begins on an important renewable energy initiative for Nunavik

Quaqtaq, Nunavik — June 18, 2026 — Tarquti marked the official start of construction for the Tingirrautaq Wind Energy Project this week with a small groundbreaking ceremony in Quaqtaq, bringing together community leadership, local project partners, and representatives from Tarquti’s shareholders, Makivvik and Ilagiisaq-FCNQ.

The gathering was held to recognize the beginning of construction work for the Tingirrautaq Project, an important step forward in advancing locally anchored renewable energy development in Nunavik. This unique and innovative project represents continued progress toward reducing reliance on diesel-generated electricity while supporting Inuit participation and leadership in the region’s energy future.

“The beginning of construction in Quaqtaq marks an important step for Nunavik,” said Pita Aatami, President of Makivvik. “For many years, our communities have been looking at ways to reduce dependence on diesel while ensuring that development reflects Inuit priorities and decision-making. Tingirrautaq demonstrates that renewable energy projects can be developed in a way that respects local realities and creates lasting benefits close to home. We look forward to seeing this project take shape over the coming months.”

The ceremony included participation from local leadership, community representatives, the Quaqtaq Co-op, the Tuvaaluk Landholding Corporation, and Tarquti shareholders from Makivvik and Ilagiisaq-FCNQ. Together, their involvement reflects the collaborative approach behind the Tingirrautaq Project and the importance of ensuring renewable energy development in Nunavik is rooted in local priorities and long-term community benefit.

“For the Quaqtaq Co-op, being part of this project is about supporting practical solutions that can benefit our community today and in the future,” said William Nigiuruvik, President of the Quaqtaq Co-op. “Tingirrautaq shows how local organizations can play an important role in projects that support the energy transition, create opportunities, and contribute to the well-being of our community.”

As a local partner in the project, the Tuvaaluk Landholding Corporation has played an important role in supporting the development of Tingirrautaq in Quaqtaq. Its involvement reflects the importance of community-based participation in renewable energy projects and the need to ensure that development respects local lands, local leadership, and local decision-making.

“This project is taking place on our lands, in our community, and it is important that local voices are part of the process,” said Mae Tukkiapik, President of the Tuvaaluk Landholding Corporation. “We are proud to support a project that is connected to the future of Quaqtaq and that it will benefit our community during construction and operation phases for years to come while taking concrete actions towards climate change ”

“It has been a great pleasure to take part in the development of this important milestone for our region,” said Kulu Tukalak, President of Ilagiisaq-FCNQ. “The Tingirrautaq Project builds on a vision that began years ago, when Ilagiisaq-FCNQ and Makivvik came together to create what is now Tarquti. I believe it is important to recognize the leaders and board members who helped make that partnership possible, including the late Aliva Tulugak, former President of Ilagiisaq-FCNQ, whose leadership helped advance this idea in its early stages. Today, that vision continues through projects like Tingirrautaq, supporting economic opportunity in clean energy and helping strengthen energy security for Nunavik.”

Construction work is now beginning in Quaqtaq and will continue over the coming months. This year’s work will focus on civil construction, including buidings, road access and turbine foundation needed to prepare the site for the next phase of the project. Turbine delivery and assembly are expected to take place during the construction season next summer, with Tarquti planning to hold a larger community celebration when the turbine project is commissioned and ready to begin operations.

While this week’s gathering marked the official kickoff of construction, the future commissioning event will provide an opportunity for the broader community to come together, celebrate the project’s completion, and recognize the many people who contributed to making Tingirrautaq possible.

The Tingirrautaq Project is part of Tarquti’s broader mandate to develop a portfolio of 12 community renewable energy projects in Nunavik, in collaboration with Hydro-Quebec, that support environmental stewardship, Inuit self-determination, local participation, and long-term economic opportunity.

Tarquti thanks the community of Quaqtaq, local leadership, the Quaqtaq Co-op, the Tuvaaluk Landholding Corporation, Makivvik, Ilagiisaq-FCNQ, and all partners involved for their continued support and collaboration as construction begins.
