Nunavik Interest Towards Clean Energy Transition Take the survey now!

The community of Umiujaq was founded in 1986 after a clause was added to the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. This gave the Inuit of Kuujjuarapik the opportunity to relocate to an area unaffected by La Grande and Great Whale hydroelectric projects. Umiujag and its 370 inhabitants are located approximately 160 km north of Kuujjuarapik and almost 1,500 km north of Montreal. Nested at the foot of a hill, the village vaguely resembles an overturned boat near Hudson Bay.

The community of Umiujaq shows great interest in solar energy. Tarquti will thus continue developing the solar project with the Hydro Solar committee and assessing the alternate solar project site on the airport road. In the coming years, Tarquti in partnership with the local Co-op and the Landholding will engage with local entities to create a Community Energy Plan and build an Energy Team.
