Nunavik Interest Towards Clean Energy Transition Take the survey now!
Kuujjuaq, Nunavik’s largest community with a population of 2,828, is located on the western shore of the mighty Koksoak River, about 50 km upstream from Ungava Bay. It’s the only Nunavik community situated on a body of fresh water. Kuujjuaq is the administrative hub of the region and the gateway to air travelers arriving in and departing from Nunavik.
In 2021, Tarquti’s team installed a wind measurement tower to undertake a wind resource assessment and evaluate the region’s wind potential. More data will be collected in the coming years as the wind measurement tower is moved to a new location later in 2023. The community of Kuujjuaq has demonstrated great interest in clean energy solutions.
In September 2017, Makivvik installed rows of solar panels on their two main buildings in Kuujjuaq to test the technology. In the summer of 2022, Kuujjuamiut Inc.’s General Manager Jason Aitchison, led the installation of a 100 kW solar-power system to cover all of the Arena’s energy usage during the summer months while also generating considerable energy surplus that was fed back into the grid. This clean energy initiative was made possible thanks to Natural Resources Canada’s – Indigenous Off-Diesel Initiative.
